This is one of the most famous lighthouses in America and one of the best interpretive locations to learn about Great Lakes maritime history. Whitefish Point is 17 miles from the location where, on Nov. 10, 1975, a fierce storm sank the freighter “Edmund Fitzgerald” along with its iron ore and 29 crewmen. The museum at Whitefish Point chronicles the history of many shipwrecks in Lake Superior, and includes the original ship’s bell of the “Fitz”. The lighthouse itself is not climbable. Jeffrey revisited here on 8/24/02, a cloudy brisk morning.
