Well, Jeffrey HAD to visit his namesake lighthouse and revisited it on 3/23/02.
Jeffreys Hook has a wonderful history. Moved to this location on the Hudson from Sandy Hook, NJ in 1920, it was made obsolete only 9 years later by the construction of the George Washington Bridge. The light was considered surplus and was going to be torn down and scrapped. Then came a children’s book about Jeffreys Hook called “The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge”. The book’s popularity helped create public support for the lighthouse to be saved. Late in 2002, Jeffreys Hook was re-lit in a public ceremony.
This lighthouse can be found in Fort Washington Park in Manhattan. You can park near Lafayette Square, where Riverside meets W. 181st St. Find the walkway over northbound NY 9 at 1830 Riverside and continue under the southbound lanes, then over a railroad trestle, to the lighthouse. |
