36. Fort Washington Lighthouse

Fort Washington MD
sighted from distance or out at sea multiple visits
autumn 2000
JOY OF LIGHTHOUSES! This is Jeffrey’s most visited lighthouse, within an hour’s drive from home and very popular with the young wickie. As the name implies, Fort Washington is a historic fortress on the Potomac River just downstream from Washington D.C. at Piscataway Creek. The fort itself sits high on a bluff overlooking the river, while the lighthouse is down below at the water’s edge. During the War of 1812, the British sneaked a ship past Fort Washington. From the fort and lighthouse, you can look upstream and see Jones Point Lighthouse, the Woodrow Wilson Bridge and the monuments of Washington D.C. on a clear day. In season, the fort and museum are open and the park rangers here discharge the cannons!
