43. Twin Lights of Navensink

As ocean-going vessles would cross the Atlantic from Europe, they would look for the Twin Lights from as far as 70 miles away and adjust their heading into New York harbor. If the first lighthouse they saw was not the Twin Lights, they knew they were considerably off course. In Twin Lights State Park, there is a nice museum and gift shop here. The museum display includes an operating first-order Fresnel Lens with impressive candlepower. We enjoyed two additional trips to the Twin Lights in the next 18 months. Our second visit, on the last day of 2001, provided perfect viewing of the Atlantic and New York’s Lower Bay. Our third visit on 10/19/02 was during the NJ Lighthouse Challenge. It was a rare opportunity to climb the southern light, which is typically off-limits.
