Montauk is one of the Mid-Atlantic’s premier lighthouses. Located at the east end of Long Island, this lighthouse was in dire straits by 1990, but activism saved it. A benefit concert was performed in the town of Montauk, which included Billy Joel and Paul Simon. We climbed to the top, got a great listen at the foghorn and saw some of the fury of the Atlantic. There is a museum and extensive gift shop. It is well worth the extra miles if you are ever on Long Island.
