Fort Monroe, where the James River meets the Chesapeake, has been a strategic location since colonial times. The fort is famous for being the only continuous Union stronghold in the South during the Civil War. After the war, Confederate President Jefferson Davis was jailed here for two years. The Old Point Comfort Lighthouse graces the fort, and it enjoyed a fresh coat of paint when Jeff visited here.
