We first saw the ruin of the Fuller Rock Lighthouse soon after leaving Providence on the RIPTA boat, then saw Pomham Rocks. As you can see, the Pomham Rocks Light sits on a rugged outcrop which is best viewed from the river.
A curious and necessary piece of engineering exists on the Providence River. The Hurricane Barrier is located between Pomham Rocks and downtown Providence. This large barrier was built after the hurricane of 1938 flooded downtown Providence with water pushed inland up the river. |
