Back to Jeffrey's Lighthouse Visits
St. Joseph Inner Lighthouse, St.
Joseph, MI - August 30, 2001
St. Joseph Outer Lighthouse, St. Joseph, MI - August 30, 2001

St. Joseph was an introduction to several
"pier head" lighthouses, which were out on piers in Lake Michigan
about 1000' long. The piers provided Jeffrey with good exercise between drives.
The catwalk here is also indicative of pier head lighthouses. The catwalks
were necessary as waves and wind crashed into the piers, rendering them slick
and dangerous for the light keepers to traverse. In winter, the piers would
coat over with thick sheets of ice and the catwalks kept clear of the icing.
