Back to Jeffrey's Lighthouse Visits

Crisp Point Lighthouse, Paradise, MI - September 1, 2001

A smile from atop the Crisp Point light. The remote shoreline of Lake Superior is in the background. There used to be several hundred feet of land between the lighthouse and the lake, and several buildings on site. Erosion took away the land and the lighthouse service dismantled many of the structures. By 1990, only the tower was left and Crisp Point was another lighthouse in danger of falling into the water. Local citizens took care of the lighthouse during the 1990s, installing a jetty to hold back the lake and giving the tower a facelift. Like Round Island, Crisp Point has enjoyed a miracle comeback despite its isolation.

Reaching Crisp Point by land is no easy task. From MI 123, it is a 19-mile drive on gravel and dirt roads to get here…and you have to return the way you came…but it's worth it.
