Back to Jeffrey's Lighthouse Visits
Jeffreys Hook Lighthouse, Manhattan, NY - October 2000

Well, Jeffrey HAD to visit his namesake lighthouse. Less than 100 years old, Jeffreys Hook Light has an interesting history. Built in 1920 along the Hudson River in Manhattan, it was made obsolete only 9 years later by the construction of the George Washington Bridge. The light was considered surplus and was going to be torn down and scrapped. Then came a children's book about Jeffrey's Hook called "The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge". The moral of the story is that the little things do matter in life, even obsolete lighthouses. The book's popularity helped create public support for the lighthouse to be saved.
It can be found if you are trying to find it on walkways in Fort Washington Park leading west over (then under) the lanes of NY 9 in Manhattan. Park near Lafayette Square, where Riverside meets W. 181st St., and find the walkway over northbound NY 9 on Riverside.
