Back to Jeffrey's Lighthouse Visits
Thirty Mile Point Lighthouse, Golden Hill State Park, NY - August 28, 2001

The significance of Thirty Mile Point is that it sticks out northward into Lake Ontario such that one can see the sun rise AND set over the lake. It is so named because it is 30 miles from Fort Niagara and the Niagara River. While driving the coast road, NY 18, we witnessed a freighter making its way slowly across the lake towards the St. Lawrence River it took hours. Dad and Jeff briefly put on swim trunks and got their feet wet in the rocky and chilly waters as the sun sank to the west. It was very breezy and we moved our car-campsite inland to avoid the buffeting wind. We camped out with the flicker of the lighthouse every 10 seconds and more stars visible than you can imagine.

At Niagara Falls.
